🎮 What is Momentum Mod?
    Momentum Mod is a first-person platforming game built on Valve’s Source Engine that centralizes movement-oriented game modes from games like CS:S, TF2, HL2, and Titanfall, all in one game! Speed is literally the name of the game, with game modes offering unique styles of play, centered around one goal: go fast!

    🎯 Deliverables

      ︎ Designed Steam library assets
      ︎Provisioned various game iconography
      ︎Attended weekly meetings &amp; elected as Dept. Head!
      ︎1,600+ hours of QA Testing, user feedback
      ︎Designed low &amp; high-fidelity mockups in PS and Figma
      ︎Utilized Figma to collaborate and create interactive mockups

    ❗ Issues

      Map selector screen was confusing, with buttons out of place
      Main menu screen was very minimal, designed to be placeholder
      Overall UI looked very out of date and empty
      Screen transitions were jarring and out of place
      Unable to display more than 5-6 maps in the map browser at once
      Lack of map previews or easily-accessible map information
      No implementation for user’s profile or profile statistics

    ✅ Solutions

      Designed a new map selector screen using research and feedback to solve user pain points
      Updated main menu screen to preview a random map from the user’s library in the background (optional setting)
      Designed a new UI palette inspired by other modern Source games (such as CS:GO)
      Using motion design, we created smooth fading screen transitions
      Updated the map selector focusing on a much larger map list to solve this issue
      Offered plenty of map information at-a-glance, such as completion status, difficulty, best time, and more
      Implemented “user cards” in the main menu’s HUD to show player stats

Where has Izzy been?(Posted on Mar 18th 2024)

Wow, it’s been a while! Let me write a paragraph about how the last 2 years have been a rough (yet extremely beneficial) learning experience for Izzy. I’ve experienced homelessness, personal loss, food insecurity, and more. I’m proud to say I’ve overcome many of these struggles, and I’ve learned a lot about myself throughout the process! I want to share some of the wisdom I’ve gained from this arduous time in my life.

<img width="1836" height="1836" width_o="1836" height_o="1836" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/508d3537bdc5484b1638235bba8e1e1ed3fa02a2caa2bd4ea4f13bdf38b3ffd4/PXL_20230909_211642294.jpg" data-mid="207081303" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/508d3537bdc5484b1638235bba8e1e1ed3fa02a2caa2bd4ea4f13bdf38b3ffd4/PXL_20230909_211642294.jpg" />

	Since the beginning of 2020 I’ve experienced hardships that (fortunately) not many people have ever experienced in their lives. Through these difficult times, I’ve learned and grown stronger as a human.&nbsp; I’ve worked with therapists, and I’ve explored for further knowledge on emotional regulation techiques. I’m fascinated by the human brain, and how people interface with technology. Learning how my brain works and how I handle difficult problems in real life, has brought me much closer to my sense of inner spirituality.
I think an often overlooked aspect of life is how our bodies are the sacred ‘vessel’ that gives us life. I also believe in the power behind ‘labeling’. Our self-image plays a huge role in who we are, and as a result, dictates our behaviors and decision making. If you have a negative behavior, find the part of that behavior associated with your identity, and question it!
Think about it this way; Do you REALLY want to be somebody who smokes cigarettes? Want to stop over-eating? Label yourself mentally as a ‘non-smoker’ or ‘someone who doesn’t eat much’ and see what changes. I think there’s a very strong power connected to our language and that includes the labels we give ourselves. Becoming self-aware of that power is the first step towards improving our self image!

Processing grief &amp; emotions
Something I had to learn was how to process grief. I believe in the 5 stages of grief, and I try to process my feelings as responsibly and effectively as possible.
<img width="750" height="500" width_o="750" height_o="500" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/d26492ab9b9fe568224517d7d28ebb361397d7a84766d5f8cc8e10268f6f4a38/4175361_color1-5c3b9069c9e77c0001c6c85f.png" data-mid="207081335" border="0" data-scale="50" data-no-zoom src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/750/i/d26492ab9b9fe568224517d7d28ebb361397d7a84766d5f8cc8e10268f6f4a38/4175361_color1-5c3b9069c9e77c0001c6c85f.png" />
(Credit: VeryWellMind.com)

DenialDenial is a phase I don’t typically find myself struggling with. As a “realistic optimist” that loves finding silver linings within bad events, I find it relatively easy to accept the reality of a situation, rather than denying the reality of a situation.
Anger
Anger is an emotion I have become very familiar with. I recognize it’s effects on me and people around me, so I usually hold onto my anger until I’m alone and/or in a safe environment to let my anger out. I typically let my anger out in constructive ways! I like problem solving, so if my anger stems from a “problem”, my brain jumps into problem solving mode.
Bargaining
Barganing is a phase I process completely internally. Sometimes I will bargain with myself by asking myself (my ego) “a loss has occurred, how do you proceed?” and the other part of my brain (the thoughtful part) will usually respond with something along the lines of “where are we now, and what life changes does this loss bring with it?”
Depression
I’m happy to say I feel like I’ve conquered my depression! I exercise regularly, eat mindfully, get plenty of sun and outdoor exposure, and I have some very efficient emotional regulation techiniques! In the past, depression has made thinking-ahead feel impossible, but that’s simply my brain building itself a cage to feel safe inside.
Acceptance
The final stage Acceptance is a stage that I feel I struggle with the most, funny enough. I struggle after I gain an understanding that a loss has occured, while I also realize I can’t do anything to “go back” or “hit undo”. It puts me in a state of “okay, so now what do we do?” where my next decisions tend to have more significance than previous ones.

Dealing with hindsight, expectations, and more wisdom...
Handling strong emotions &amp; grief can be one of the toughest aspects of life for many people. Emotional and mental pain can be just as damaging and taxing on us as physical pain. A lot of people overlook the severity of trauma, and how it can affect the rest of our lives.
I often find myself struggling to cope with hindsight in some past instances. Self talk along the lines of “Had I paid more attention to x or y, z would have never happened in the first place”. This is classic denial, and recognizing it as such allows me to move on past it, thankfully...
Expectations are a tricker one... society has expectations of us that, when not met, can lead to lots of suffering. We sadly live in a pay-to-live world right now, and existing isn’t free. That’s an expectation I struggle with often, since a lot of my hobbies and passions don’t make me money currently. I’m working on changing that, though!
	<img width="1080" height="675" width_o="1080" height_o="675" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/551684d94e5ef16008b40ecda6715f24496e67bf77063aa4fe5ada4d2dc1a6e3/image_2024-03-18_150449583.png" data-mid="207082210" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/551684d94e5ef16008b40ecda6715f24496e67bf77063aa4fe5ada4d2dc1a6e3/image_2024-03-18_150449583.png" />

	&nbsp;

So, what’re you doing now?
Since recovering from great family loss, personal loss, and housing insecurity, I’ve begun blossoming as a person! I started learning 3d modeling in Blender once I realized my fear of learning/tutorials was baseless, and I’ve since begun game production for some videogames I’ve always wanted to create! I want to create multiple videogames, so I’m designing a “game production framework” to allow me to do exactly that, solo!
I don’t see confusion as a source of frustration anymore, and I now view confusion as a tool to push me closer to understanding, instead! If I get confused regarding how to complete a specific task in Blender, instead of becoming frustrating, I become more and more curious... I think this mental approach has been doing me wonders, perhaps you can implement this technique into your own life!
Thank you all for reading this far, and I’m excited to share more about my journey now that things are settling down and my survival necessities aren’t at risk anymore. Look forward to many more posts &amp; projects from me moving forward!

My first UI Art test(Posted on Apr 29th 2023)

I want to share my experience completing a quick art test I was given while interviewing for a UI Designer role at Amazon Games for their live service game “New World”. This test was not covered under any form of NDA, so today I’m going to explain the prompt that was given to me, detail my entire thought process from start to finish, and share my results with you all!

<img width="1067" height="1603" width_o="1067" height_o="1603" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/9c6c09673a1cac1d373fcc21f76c47676f43207c292bbe98e7499a2dfd1007dc/Achievement-Icon-Style-Guide.jpg" data-mid="178553938" border="0" data-scale="70" alt="New World icon style guide" data-caption="New World icon style guide" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/9c6c09673a1cac1d373fcc21f76c47676f43207c292bbe98e7499a2dfd1007dc/Achievement-Icon-Style-Guide.jpg" />

First of all, for me to begin I need to understand the deliverables. The assignment asked me to do the following:Create at least one screen mock of HUD element for ‘Achievement unlocked’ celebrationDesign an achievement icon and UI elements (use given icon &amp; create new)Create animated Figma preview“1920x1080, 72ppi PNG or JPG” (not a task but a guideline to abide by)
Now, understanding that I am being asked to complete 3 individual tasks I begin by first getting a solid understanding of the game’s existing UI and UX design. How do I do that? Well simple, through playing the game yourself and/or reviewing gameplay screenshots and videos!

Understanding the product
Some design situations require us designers to build something from the ground up or completely reinvision an existing product, however in this case I am being asked to build upon an existing, already established design framework. I’m being asked to create a new icon from scratch but that’s one simple asset and won’t take long at all. I’m also supposed to create an “Achievement unlocked” HUD popup too however, so I take plenty of time to take in the game’s pre-existing design direction in order to maintain visual consistency throughout the rest of the game’s UI when designing a new element.
I did this by skimming through a 7 hour long gameplay clip which conveniently showcased lots of various UI’s and HUD’s the player could encounter while playing. I screenshotted each new/unique UI menu I came across until I essentually ended up with one big collage full of various unique UI elements, specifically screenshotting various HUD popups since that’ll be one of the things I’m designing for this test.

Creating the iconNow that I’ve gained a solid understanding of the game’s design direction and core visual philosophies, I start by designing a new achievement icon in Adobe Illustrator.There’s not much to say about it since I’m following pretty straight forward guidelines in regards to this new icon’s design, so here’s the final result:
<img width="293" height="296" width_o="293" height_o="296" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/eff476e4ac3761349846b70041f03f88beb7082d2e4d43f42f59b93b335c0d40/Untitled.png" data-mid="178554496" border="0" alt="Original icon provided" data-caption="Original icon provided" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/293/i/eff476e4ac3761349846b70041f03f88beb7082d2e4d43f42f59b93b335c0d40/Untitled.png" />
<img width="600" height="600" width_o="600" height_o="600" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/930209c07cddd73771045b29aca0fec8ba02fc00e80221d3510a2a593d3ece56/new-turkey-icon.png" data-mid="178554445" border="0" alt="New icon design" data-caption="New icon design" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/600/i/930209c07cddd73771045b29aca0fec8ba02fc00e80221d3510a2a593d3ece56/new-turkey-icon.png" />

Creating the HUD pop-up

Now that I have a new icon that matches the style of every other icon in the game, I continue to my next step which is to create the HUD pop-up (also known as a “toast” notification). For this step I was already given a wireframe example with guidelines placed in the exact boundaries for this pop-up on the screen, so I use that as my starting point, and from there I simply start to recreate the pre-existing HUD design for achievement pop-ups (since they already existed in the game).

I did notice that there was an achievement pop-up already in the game while doing my visual design research, however that pre-existing pop-up for achievements specifically appears in the top right corner of the screen and the wireframe guideline they provided has it positioned in the center horizontally instead. For my first design iteration I simply recreated the design for the existing achievement pop-up that users are used to already, but centering it to fit the wireframe.
Here are my final results:
<img width="1920" height="1080" width_o="1920" height_o="1080" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/d845cd1658a758a3440fabb324ad61794e8ece74bfcbd916efc713c7aeac6e49/Mockup.png" data-mid="178555739" border="0" data-scale="50" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/d845cd1658a758a3440fabb324ad61794e8ece74bfcbd916efc713c7aeac6e49/Mockup.png" />Since it did say “create at least one”, I’ve created another revision, and this time I tried to take a newer approach by emulating the visual style of other HUD pop-ups. For this revision I took inspiration from the “territorial triumph” pop-up specifically since it looked more visually striking to me:&nbsp;

<img width="1920" height="1080" width_o="1920" height_o="1080" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/7d33e2e3f0b34954205b4a43196dccaf07ffb29510f0d1e99aae562c3ffea7e7/Mockup.png" data-mid="178555961" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/7d33e2e3f0b34954205b4a43196dccaf07ffb29510f0d1e99aae562c3ffea7e7/Mockup.png" />
<img width="1920" height="1080" width_o="1920" height_o="1080" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/7ef61493b29946bc0b5bf685d59ed49bea71a1eebafa928fcb40717be8069953/Mockup-buttons.png" data-mid="178555960" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/7ef61493b29946bc0b5bf685d59ed49bea71a1eebafa928fcb40717be8069953/Mockup-buttons.png" />

And finally for good measure, I created a 3rd revision and did my best to combine the first revision with the layout of the “territory claimed” pop-up since they’re both comprised of similar visual elements, and doing so gave me this final result:

<img width="1920" height="1080" width_o="1920" height_o="1080" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/f89f6fafb4fc91d00af394eafd509f26edd2f37dc59b447415f7a9553e5d6622/Mockup-buttons.png" data-mid="178556430" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/f89f6fafb4fc91d00af394eafd509f26edd2f37dc59b447415f7a9553e5d6622/Mockup-buttons.png" />
<img width="1920" height="1080" width_o="1920" height_o="1080" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/84cc0310e3359ab8085dda495dbb7f4cbe0d822181d7e129f03774b2a5389418/Mockup.png" data-mid="178556433" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/84cc0310e3359ab8085dda495dbb7f4cbe0d822181d7e129f03774b2a5389418/Mockup.png" />

Final touches &amp; thoughtsLastly, the prompt asked me to “create an animated Figma preview” of my design(s), so I did exactly that! I added some very simple animations and a couple buttons on the screen to cycle through each design I created. There’s not a very simple way for me to show you how that turned out through images since it’s literally the same images as above, but with sliding and fade-in-out effects added.
That’s honestly about it! I didn’t do anything insane with the Figma demo since it doesn’t need to do anything other than give you a better idea of what it would look and feel like ingame, so rather than including pictures of the final demo, why not just share the link?
Here’s a link to the interactive demo so you can try it out for yourself! Once I completed this final step and finished writing down all of my notes for my “Design Process.docx” file, I zipped everything up and sent it off! I had a lot of fun working on this, and I’ve even completed another separate art test for Bungie! That art test however, was under an NDA so unfortunately I can’t really share anything meaningful about that experience with all of you...
Thank you for reading, and I hope this gives you a clearer understanding of my approach to a design challenge! I’m eager to go out of my way and overachieve when it comes to proving my capabilities as a designer. Art tests are one of my favorite things to work on since they’re essentially created to give us designers a chance to stand out from the rest and show people what we’re truly capable of!

Style Guidelines &amp; Brand Identity(Posted on Nov 20th 2022)

What are style guidelines, UI palettes, and what does brand identity mean? I look forward to answering those questions in this post! When doing UI design, you’re going to want a “toolbox” of different UI elements that are frequently reused. This includes things like buttons, sliders, and text boxes, but can also include specified standards for font sizes and colors too.

<img width="1100" height="500" width_o="1100" height_o="500" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/b71d8e555e86e603a094f4bba1be8bf25dca2a810c1a0395c51917d1133f2b34/UI_and_Color_Palette_0.8.6_update.png" data-mid="158617760" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/b71d8e555e86e603a094f4bba1be8bf25dca2a810c1a0395c51917d1133f2b34/UI_and_Color_Palette_0.8.6_update.png" />

	Here’s an example of a UI palette I created for the game Momentum Mod. It’s not what I decided to go with in the end, but it still gives you a good idea of what it looks like to specify style guidelines. These help visualize the design direction you’re wanting to go towards, and can give your colleagues a better understanding of the overall aesthetic desired.
Any titling uses Bebas Neue, the default font is Noto Sans, and the console specifically uses Source Code Pro. All colors are pre-determined and clarified. It also visually demonstrates how the buttons will work, clarifying the appearance for neutral, hovering, pressed, and disabled statuses. I usually include a list of standard font sizes, however it appears I didn’t for this specific example. All of these guidelines are important for a UI designer to follow in order to maintain visual consistency.

What’s Brand Identity?
When we think of a brand, things like our experience with the brand and it’s visual identity come into play. When you’re designing for a company or brand, you’ll want to tie the brand’s identity into the visual aspect of your design. What does brand identity mean though? Brand identity encompasses things like the company’s colors, patterns, icons, logos, and typography. Establishing a solid brand identity is important for helping brands stand out from the rest.
If you’re creating a brand identity design, you’re going to want to do research first. You’ll want to find out what color schemes and design themes are shared amongst similar products to the one you’re designing for. If you’re creating an online storefront for women’s fitness for example, it’s best to take a look at existing brands and see how they chose to represent themselves visually speaking.
A logo from a brand’s perspective is essentially equivilent to it’s name. When people see the logo, they think of the brand. How a brand’s logo appears visually can say a lot about the company without saying anything at all. Designing a logo using principles like shape language and color theory can help influence users to feel a specific intended feeling too! Companies like Coca-cola and Facebook use research and scientific studies to determine which colors evoke the right feeling towards the brand, and it’s honestly a fascinating realm of psychology that ties directly in with design.

Why do these things matter so much?

Whether you’re a UI or UX designer, your role plays a significant part in how users feel and interact with a product. Products being created by large studios or individual brands rely on their users having a positive experience. Here’s some statistics that help explain why having a good brand identity is important:“88% of online consumers are less likely to return to a site after a bad experience““Judgments on website credibility are 75% based on a website’s overall aesthetics““38% of people will stop engaging with a website if the content/layout is unattractive“
Credit to in.nau.edu
These sentements echo a familiar note to many of us, as I’m sure we’ve all had poor user experiences with a product at some point. These statistics point to the aesthetics of a website being extremely important for brand image and user retention, things brands care deeply about. If your design goes against previous established guidelines, users can easily become confused and even frustrated. A user’s experience with a brand’s product directly impacts how the user views the brand as a whole, so roles like UX and UI design are very important in helping brands accomplish their goals.

Hopefully this article has helped shed some light on these two subjects. Style Guidelines are important for establishing a consistent visual identity, and brand identity itself is something us as designers attempt to shape through design. Positive brand image comes from a solid brand identity, and a good user experience. Thank you for reading!

Design: Where do I start?(Posted on Nov 10th 2022)

Design, whether that’s UX, UI, motion, interaction, or sound design... what does it mean to be a designer, and what’s the difference between an artist and a designer? How do I decide which design field I want to get into? In this post I’ll explain the difference between different design roles, as well as share my personal experience throughout my design journey.

<img width="1000" height="619" width_o="1000" height_o="619" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/9f55ababdeb2487aeef0922c0250eff0122ef584d08f8b1285ee1c50601f00a6/Designer-vs-Artist.png" data-mid="158540404" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/9f55ababdeb2487aeef0922c0250eff0122ef584d08f8b1285ee1c50601f00a6/Designer-vs-Artist.png" />

	I’m no artist, how could I become a designer?
Firstly I’ll start by differentiating between Artists and Designers. An artist is someone who (unsurprisingly) can create visual art, usually from scratch. Their main purpose is to convey a specific emotion or intent through purely artistic/visual means. Now listening to that, I’m sure you’re hearing plenty of overlap with things designers do, which is true! Designers usually take a different approach when designing something however...
Designers can either create art (or “assets” as they’re usually called) for specific elements of a product’s design, or take pre-existing assets created by graphics designers and other artists and assemble them into a larger, coherent, functional piece. I’m being vague about design because it can be applied to a lot of different things such as videogames, websites, apps, or even physical products! UX Designers specifically seek to understand the user’s intentions and emotions throughout their product journey.

Both designers and artists attempt to convey a specific intention through their work. They also often collaborate with one another (assuming they’re not both handled by one person). When talking about videogame design specifically, someone who does UX design can end up working closely with graphics designers, UI designers, level designers, and even sound designers!

Okay, but what about UX/UI designers?This topic ties back into the start of the last paragraph where I say “assuming they’re not both handled by one person”, because that’s typically what people in this specific role do. A UX/UI Designer is in charge of the visual elements of a product, as well as the overall experience being delivered to the user. This role is often delegated to more seasoned designers who have experience in multiple areas of design, and it often prioritizes the UX side of things.I could write an entire article on how confusing and unwelcoming the hiring industry is when it comes to design roles, but that’s for another day. It’s unfortunately very common for companies to ask a single designer to handle many significant areas of design. When you’re approaching the UX field, you’ll find job listing after job listing that lists requirements that are far beyond user experience design, and if you land a UX role, you’re likely to end up having other design responsibilities outside of UX.

How do I know which field I want to go into?Allow me to list a handful of specialized design fields and give you an idea of each of their responsibilities. Once you have a better understanding on what purpose each of these roles serve, perhaps you’ll find yourself becoming more interested in one area than another! This is just a few of the major design roles you’ll find in the wild, but there are many more design-related fields out there.

UX Designer - Responsible for helping deliver an enjoyable, equitible, useful, and usable experience to the users. They often work closely with many other designers and artists, and can help completely transform how a user sees, feels, and interacts with a product.

UI Designer/Artist - Delivers a visually interesting and engaging experience to the users, often in charge of helping visually shaping the design of a product. They can be responsible for designing anything from a videogame’s individual screens and HUDs, to a website’s login screen.

Motion Designer - Helps with the user’s journey through different areas of the product, ensuring the path to each aspect of a product is simple and efficient. They help make sure transitions between screens and interfaces flows intuitively.

Interaction Designer - This role often overlaps with UX design, making sure all elements of a screen or menu operate in ways that are efficient at accomplishing a user’s goals. They can end up working with IOT devices, physical products, or digital products.

Sound Designer - In charge of delivering an immersive and responsive experience, utilizing things such as music, auditory narration, and/or sound effects. They can really help bring a product to life, on top of being able to deliver an entirely unique experience to the users.

Visual Designer - This role is more of a generalized role encompassing UX, UI, and Interaction design, and depend greatly on what product is being designed. With physical products, a visual designer’s job can be to help tie brand identity to the product. Digitally, they can help solve visual design problems users may have.
Level Designer - A role specific to game design that focuses on delivering an impactful, memorable experience to the users. Through level design, a designer can craft extremely engaging experiences, and when done well, can help a user feel fully immersed in an experience.

Of these roles though, which one(s) stood out to you most? Are you a problem solver? Perhaps UI or Interaction design would interest you. Passionate about creating an enjoyable user experience? UX design and level design can both help accomplish that! No matter your interests, if you have a desire to create, there’s a design role out there suited for you.

How can I learn more?There’s tons of resources on the internet to further your knowledge! If you’re looking to formalize your knowledge for example, try looking into sites like Coursera and find a certification program for the field you’re passionate about. If you’re just trying to get a better understanding of design as a whole, there are tons of wonderful designers who are also Youtubers, and watching “a day in the life” videos can really help you get a better grasp of all responsibilities involved. For videogame design specifically, I love listening to older Game Developer Conference (GDC) talks, and I highly recommend checking some out.The internet is a limitless body of knowledge, and all it takes is a spark of curiosity to begin your journey. If you end up diving head first into a field you end up deciding you’re not fond of, don’t get discouraged! As mentioned previously, many jobs these days require you to have at least some knowledge of various different design fields. Try reaching out and networking with other designers as well on sites like Linkedin! Freelance work can also be a huge help when first building your design portfolio and helping you showcase your capabilities.Design is a very large, virtually all-encompassing field and it’s understandable to feel overwhelmed in the beginning, but once you’ve started to gravitate towards a specific area of design, it can help that overwhelming feeling disappear over time. You’ve got this!!!
